The Spatial Mode

The spatial mode of communication serves as the backdrop that overlaps all other modes, and yet, it can carry information that is unique to itself. We can think of space in many ways; inner space, outer space, the spaces between, virtual spaces, and the liminal spaces of exploration & learning are all counting on this metaphor of space, or the very representation of the relationship of objects in space, and in time. In class we played a map-making game called “The Quiet Year” to see an effect of space on social environments. Here, however, we explore space in different ways.

Exploring the Spatial Modality

Below and on the Spatial Archive page you will find pieces that explore the ideas of space as a concept, and some that demonstrate the concept of spatial communication through positioning, grouping/clustering, and narrative movement.

The Study of Perceptive and Perception

Description: This presentation studies vectors, perspective, and perception and how they connect to hometown locations as a way to explore the spatial mode through an open- ended lens. By studying familiar spaces, the team was able to see how positioning, visible landmarks and perception of information contributes to how we recognize depth and familiarity with our surroundings.

What Makes A Space Feel Good or Welcoming

Description: This presentation explores the effect of the spatial mode on comfort and mood through the study of feng shui. It delves into multiple facettes of interior design like light, barriers, and roundness and how they affect the movement of energy through a space, inviting or isolating the viewer. It also provides a guide to reorganizing a space to better embody feng shui principles.
